Critical Mass, San Francisco - July 25, 1997

The Lombard Group

The July 25, 1997 Critical Mass bicycle protest in San Francisco splintered into 6 or more large groups.  These photos cover the Lombard group (or one of the Lombard groups).  The route went up Market Street, to Polk Street, over to Franklin, then downhill to Lombard.  After that, a brutal steep climb up Lombard, then down the twisty street to Columbus Ave., then Stockton through the Stockton Tunnel.  The ride then went past Union Square, and maneuvered around the dreaded police trap near Sansome and Montgomery, (which was not quite sprung yet, I think).  Then down Market to Drumm and on to the rest of the city.

I think most of this group thought they were on the official police escort ride.  There was no way to have informed all of these people that there was no escort, so many of the cyclists were riding in procession through a few red lights and stop signs, as we have for the past 5 years.  I did not witness any spitting on cars, kicking cars, or whatever from this group.  Some people did witness motorists starting fights, though.  Let's all try to be peaceful again in August.

The images in these pages are quite large (about 700x500 pixels), to bring you as much detail as we can.  You may want to adjust your monitor resolution to 800x600 or higher, true color, for the best viewing.  Enjoy!
